A strong, quick and composed player, Boateng can operate comfortably anywhere across the back four. Before signing for his current club, HSV, he was a first-team regular at Hertha Berlin, even though he was only just 18-years-old at the time, provoking many pundits to state that we should expect big things from the youngster. Boateng, the brother of Portsmouth’s Kevin-Prince, has firmly established himself as a constant and almost essential part of HSV’s back line since his move in 2007, leading to his first international call-up from the German national side in October 2009. However, things didn’t go entirely to plan for Boateng, who would also be eligible for Ghana due to his father being from the country, as he received his marching orders in the second half of the game against Russia, after picking up a second yellow card.

Germany faces Ghana this evening with the winners guaranteed a place in the Last-16. However, the real story of the night will be the battle of opposing brothers as Kevin-Prince Boateng 23,will be representing Ghana while his brother Jerome 21, represents Germany.

Never in the history of football have two brothers taken to the opposite end of the pitch in an international match at the same time.

Although, in 2008 two brothers did play at opposite ends in a friendly between a France "A" team and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Unfortunately neither brother was on the pitch at the same time as the other.

To add further spice to this encounter, neither brother has spoken to the other after Jerome chose to break off contact following Kevin-Prince's much maligned tackle on, German captain, Michael Ballack in the FA Cup Final.

On 9 September 2007 Berliner Morgenpost reported that German National U21 Coach Dieter Eilts does not select Boateng anymore because of negative incidents that happened in the team’s Camp during the June 2007 Toulon tournament in France.

On 24 June 2009 he announced, due to the lack of future chances to earn a call up for his home country, that he will play for the Black Stars in the future and that he hopes to be part of the Ghana National team squad at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He was yet to win any caps for the Black Stars, as the status of his nationality switch was on hold pending FIFA’s approval. On 7 May 2010, Ghana’s head coach Milovan Rajevac named Boateng in his 30 man squad in preparation for the world cup in 2010. On 12 May 2010, FIFA finally approved Boateng’s nationality switch application, clearing the way for him to play for Ghana at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

In many ways the first reaction to this title would be "that's a silly question. Of course Ghana needs Michael Essien". That for sure would be our reaction too. But our question really should read something like this "Without Michael Essien, will the wheels really fall off Ghana's World Cup campaign?"

Without a doubt any team in the world today would need Michael Essien... fully fit. However if there is ever a team team that can live without the powerhouse box-to-box midfielder, who is skilled in the defensive arts, but can rip through defences just as easily, and also launch devastating missiles from long distance, that team is Ghana. World-class midfielders seem to come a dime a dozen in Ghana, and indeed most parts of Africa. There are those who have attributed this phenomenom to the popular kick-about football on the streets and sandy pitches of Africa, played with miniature goalposts that hone the dribbling and passing skills required in midfield play.

Whatever the reason, Ghana has a generation of mint fresh midfielders ready to step in for Essien and grind out results. Perhaps all fall short of the lofty standards of the Chelsea ace, but as a unit woven together by the crafty Serbian Milovan Rajevac, they become a formidable bunch to crack as Burkina Faso, Angola, Nigeria and Egypt found out at the Nations Cup in January.
